Extractions

Tooth extraction involves the removal of a tooth from its socket within the bone. This is a relatively standard dental procedure which is performed under local anaesthetic. Your dentist may recommend an extraction for many different reasons, such as:

  • Injury or trauma to a tooth.
  • Decay or infection deep within a tooth.
  • To aid in orthodontic treatment.
  • To make room for adult teeth, where baby teeth have not fallen out naturally.

If your dentist advises an extraction, they may first take an x-ray image to determine the most appropriate way to remove the tooth, based on its position, length and shape. If it is a simple extraction, the area will be numbed and the tooth removed. However, if it is deemed a more complex case, you may require a surgical extraction, or in some cases, you may be referred to an oral surgeon.

If a particular tooth is causing you concern, it is always best to book in for a consultation for advice on the different treatment options available to you. If you do require an extraction, rest assured our experienced dentists will make sure it is as painless as possible.
