Bad breath can be caused by a number of sources.

These may include:

  • Food i.e. Onions, garlic
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Gum disease
  • Dry mouth
  • Smoking and tobacco
  • Medical conditions

If you suffer from bad breath, it is important to see your dentist to diagnose the cause.

Dry Mouth

This occurs when the flow of saliva to the mouth decreases. This can be caused by various common medications including blood pressure tablets and sleeping tablets. Dry mouth can also occur due to salivary gland disease or age related changes to the salivary glands. Without enough saliva, food particles are not cleaned away properly and the protective function of saliva is lost. There is a very high risk of dental decay and gum disease if dry mouth is untreated. If you suffer from dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, please consult your dentist. Treatment may include prescription of artificial saliva gels and fluoride to protect teeth.
